Addressing the Unique Changes in Aging Skin: Part I

We all know that our skin will age. The question isn’t whether it will or won’t, it’s when and how. Because aging is expected, experts have outline specific recommendations. We know them so well that we actually might overlook them. You know, the tips about eating well and wearing sunscreen every day. Even with expert tips on how to care for your skin, there are details that you may want to know. Here, we will discuss the science of cosmetic aging to help you prepare for the unique changes that will occur in time.

There are three factors that contribute to an aging face. These include:

  • The development of dynamic wrinkles
  • The loss of volume
  • Superficial dermatologic changes

Knowing the way that the skin ages, you gain the ability to address specific problems at the right time. Seeing where you are in the aging process enables you to identify which treatments will best serve your current and future needs. In this part of our series, we’ll focus on Problem Number One, the development of dynamic wrinkles.

What are Dynamic Wrinkles, Anyway?

The beauty industry has names for every concern. Dynamic wrinkles are the lines and creases that form as a result of muscle movement. Examples of dynamic wrinkles include the crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, the horizontal lines on the forehead, and frown lines between the eyes. At first, dynamic wrinkles are only visible when we use related muscles. Remember the day when your frown lines only showed up when you squinted or actually frowned? Ah, those were the days.

Dynamic wrinkles eventually become etched into the skin, not because of muscle movement alone but because the skin loses elasticity as collagen degrades. The less elastic and stretchy the skin is, the more difficult it is for it to retract after facial movements.

Dynamic Wrinkles are Treatable

If you’ve recognized the permanence of certain lines on the areas of your face in which muscle movement is consistent, you can benefit from professional cosmetic treatments. Once dynamic wrinkles have developed, they will not go away on their own. The body makes less collagen as we age, which means wrinkles will only worsen if we do nothing about them. In our Spring Lake office, the primary way that dynamic wrinkles are treated is with Botox and Xeomin.

Both Botox and Xeomin reduce wrinkles by relaxing the muscles that cause them. The base ingredient is a purified form of botulinum toxin A, a chemical that safely prevents muscle contractions for a short time. One treatment can provide months of smoother, younger-looking skin. In addition to softening dynamic wrinkles, treatment with Botox or Xeomin also slows the progress of aging by releasing the pull on the skin.
